Frequently Asked Questions

 What is Accelerated Reader?

Accelerated Reader (AR) is a program designed to encourage students to read. AR tests student comprehension of books they have read using an online computer program.

Are there tests on books from home or the public library?

Yes! Our district subscribes to the online AR program, which means our students have access to every AR test available.

When can my child take tests?

AR tests can only be taken at school. The students have scheduled time during the day for AR. If your child reads a book at home, please send a note with the title and author (or the book) in case they need help finding the test.

What are the goals and points?

Your child's teachers will assign a points goal for each student for each nine week grading period. Each book has a point value, which is the maximum number of points that can be earned from that book, if the student scores a 100% comprehension score on the quiz. All students have an additional goal of trying to earn between an  85% and 100% comprehension rate on the quiz to earn points towards their goal.

Does my child have to answer every question correctly to get points?

To get the full amount of points available for that book, all questions must be correct. Partial credit will be awarded for scoring 85% or more correctly.

What happens if my child meets his/her goal?

Most importantly, your child will be reaping the biggest benefits of reading, which is knowledge.

Secondly, we will celebrate their success with some special recognition and a reward each nine weeks grading period.  Each homeroom teacher may also plan their own classroom reward.

Finally, students who achieve at least 3 of their 4 goals for each nine weeks period will also attend a special celebration towards the end of the year.
